Week Two Writing: Character Portrait

Kia Ora All,

Next week we're going to start a character portrait. For the students to be ready to write next week I'd like them to discuss who they are going to write about at home. They should choose someone who has had a powerful influence on their life in one way or another: a person they have loved, respected, admired, been fascinated with, or perhaps feared.
For example:

  • a special relative or neighbour
  • a grandparent
  • a favourite sports coach or teacher
Avoid choosing a peer or sibling for this one because it can be complex writing honestly about these people. The person they choose most definitely must be someone who they personally know quite well.

Once you've discussed who a good choice might be then talk about why this person is special to them. With your child, jot down some things that they remember about their person. No need to write large amounts or full sentences just bullet point some key ideas or memories. It can be useful to bring in a photo (which I'm happy to photocopy for them) or some small item that reminds them of their special person to have as inspiration while they write.

Rock on,

Mr M
