Excuses

Kia ora All,

This arvo I read the class a chapter from an Andy Griffiths novel where the main character comes up with an excuse for not doing their homework. The book is really funny and aimed perfectly at the age level of these students. We did a Writing Territories session (check my planning under Writing if you're not sure what this is) and most of the class were keen to try their hand at making up excuses for not doing things.
If you haven't looked at any writing from your child this week and were after an activity to do with them I would suggest getting them to try to write some excuses, or better still write some with them! Here are some ideas around this:

  • Make up a list of 10 excuses for why you are not able to: go to bed, go to school, tidy your room, do your homework or finish this activity.
  • Imagine someone just asked you to do one of the things from the list above. Make up a conversation between two people in which you use your list of excuses to try to get out of it.
  • Alternatively, you could present your excuses in comic book format or as a pocket book.
Enjoy the writing,

Mr M

  1. Thanks, this was a very worthwhile and entertaining writing exercise - amazing what excuses the kids can come up with!
